Chapter Seventeen

“You said it contains information about turning dragon tears into gold,” Ion says, like that answers my question.

“But it’s in an ancient dialect of Russian.”

“Russian is my first language,” Ion reminds me. “I’m over a hundred years old myself, and I’ve studied and read literature and documents that were written hundreds more years before I was born. Old Russian is my native tongue.”

“Right.” I can feel a grin spreading on my face for the first time in the last hour. Lil and I looked at the book, but couldn’t sort out exactly what it was saying. Lil’s much, much younger than Ion, and from what I understand, hasn’t spoken Russian regularly in years, whereas Ion may be one of the most proficient Old Russian speakers alive today.

If anyone can decipher the book, it’s Ion.

But he’s going to have to hurry, because I only have about eight hours before Wexler returns.

“Let’s get going. Follow me.”

I lead him back through the front of the store, where Tyna’s stocking the meat I butchered that morning. I let her know I’m going to be out, and I lead Ion to the bookshop, assessing what I need to tell him along the way.

“Did you know Eudora has a daughter?”

“Not that I’ve ever heard of.” Ion looks surprised. “Is that why you were asking me about her romantic partners?”

“Exactly. We know Lil is Eudora’s daughter, but we don’t know who her father is.”

“The time frame you were asking me about—twenty years ago? Is that how old—”

“Lil’s twenty, yes.”

“So Eudora would have been fully human when she bore her.” Ion frowns. “What’s that make Lil?”

“We don’t know yet. Her mother put her under a curse that prevented her from eating meat, blowing fire, flying, or growing a tail. We’ve managed to lift the curse, at least enough that she can eat meat.”

“Any luck blowing fire or growing a tail?”

“I don’t think she’s interested in trying. At any rate, we’ve had our hands full.”

“How’d you lift the curse?”

“Dragon tears.” I hold out my hands, wiggling my empty fingers.

“Your ring?”

“As long as Lil wears it, she can eat meat. But that leaves me without any of my gold. I don’t suppose you grabbed any from the royal treasury before you teleported here?”

“It never occurred to me.”

“Hmm.” Since I can’t teleport, it would take me days to fly home and back to fetch some. Days I don’t have, besides which, I don’t dare go home or I’d lead the yagi to my every family member. There’s no way I’d risk that. Ion’s a different case, though. “Could you pop back there and bring me some?”

“I’m still weak from teleporting all this way,” Ion reminds me. “I haven’t even rested. Besides, I thought we had the book and the yagi to deal with. Why is the gold so important?”

“I feel defenseless without it, like I’m at war without any armor,” I confess, not mentioning the very real possibility that Wexler could slap me in shackles at any moment. Still, Ion has a point.
